Encoder, Commutating, Incremental
Sunday, September 03, 2006
A Commutating Incremental Optical Encoder has been designed and developed so that its accuracy allows true 120-degree electrical positioning. This Encoder has zero electrical hysteresis and is EMI insensitive. The reduced ripple in the voltage delivered to the brushless dc motor results in a smooth operation, higher torque, and lower heat dissipation. The motor mounts the Commutating Encoder directly to the operating shaft.
The Encoder is configured to slip over the end of the motor shaft. A nylon-centering ring provides radial positioning. The code disk is lightweight and thin to minimize its angular moment of inertia. The Disk is mounted on a phenolic hub with an accurately ground internal diameter. The hub grasps the shaft with an interference fit. The Encoder component dimensioning fixes the code disk's final longitudinal position on the shaft. The critical air gap dimension between the disk and the mask is maintained. A ball thrust bearing located between the housing and the phenolic hub allows for smooth operation.
Key design features of the Encoder are: (1) a 360-degree servo groove positioning of commutation tracks to the motor poles; (2) three commutation tracks; (3) 1024 x and y pulses per revolution in quadrature; (4) and a zero reference.
